The
North St. Henri neighbourhood
in Montréal
This complex is
part of what once
was a vibrant neighbourhood
of
"travailleurs"
nestled between the
new highway, the
old canal, and a
strip
of informal brothels...
North St. Henri was
the ideal working
class
neighbourhood where
everyone lived their
lot along with a
quiet quart of
Laurentide in shirtsleeves
on the stoop after
the workday was done,
children
playing in the street.
Then came the
canal vs. the highway,
the collapse of small
industry &
manufacturing in
the city. This building
is one of many "factoires
anonymes"
slated for redundancy
through the 80's
purges of efficiency.
In the
crumbling loading
bays, & the offices
that sleep but don't
wake up the
trappings of daily
work and support
level commerce echo
through the stale
water drips. The
offices, manufacturing
floor & dismantled
loading bays ring
with echoes of hurried
calls, tight schedules,
and legions of labourers
long
gone. Pigeons &
graffiti artists
are the "directeur"
now. Owners are
replaced by spraycan
senates. The codec
is desolation. In
lots so spoiled by
industrial waste
that even condos
can't move in...
the phantoms speak
loudest.
