PHOTOGRAPHY BY
ANTONY
CAIRNS
I
made these images
as a way of exploring
the space of the
public phone box.
I had noticed that
a call box has less
of a demand now and
the space of one
seems to have become
a place of sleaze
and vandalism. They
are rendered useless
for their original
purpose and have
become dilapidated,
decaying boxes on
every corner of the
street. I felt that
the space these call
boxes had become
sinister and I wanted
to show this within
the photographs.

NAKED TOURIST
The deserted house
sat atop a low hill, about
40 yards up from the gravel
road. I wheeled the car
into the rutted dirt driveway
and pulled out of sight
behind a tumble-down barn...

I had first encountered
a derelict building
at the age of six
on a pre-war family
holiday in Ireland.
It was a ruined cottage
high in the Mountains
of Mourne, a simple
structure deserted
many years...
